Aided and abetted by Lyn Bertram and Donna Warren from Hobbysew Hornsby,

20 ladies escaped from their husbands and kids to the peaceful, fully catered retreat at Ferndale near Wisemans Ferry. There, they eached sewed a specially designed medallion quilt, while chatting and enjoying scones and cakes fresh out of the oven, lunching outside in the sunshine overlooking the river with a glass of wine, and fab dinners in the evenings, from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. Outrageous!

At night they enjoyed the privacy of cabin accommodation with a queen bed, kitchenette, and their own bathroom. As if this weren’t enough, Hobbysew donated a goody bag of products for each participant to take home.

Plans for the next get-away weekend are already being put in place with a special quilt being designed. (Photos to be posted on this website soon.) Unfortunately, the maximum number of people who can escape to Ferndale is 25, so if you would like to enjoy a weekend of outrageous indulgence, the first 25 people to pay their deposit will have their names included on the “Escapee List”. Then you just need to pop into Hobbysew Hornsby to choose your fabrics. For more details about the quilt pattern, fabric, dates & costs, email Donna, Ruth or Lyn at hornsby@hobbysew.com or phone 02 9477 5885.

Brenda Gael Smith is a whiz at improv! Improvisational pieced quilting, that is where you first create a ‘strata’ in your favourite colours. Then mix it up with cutting, slashing, insertions and other deconstruction techniques to create a fascinating yet totally co-ordinated quilt. You can learn these absorbing techniques in one of her workshops that she will be holding at Hobbysew Erina in Term 3.

The Modern X – is a fresh look at a classic quilting motif – the X or cross block. The workshop covers a variety of improvisational piecing techniques; regular and irregular block compositions; and the effective use of positive and negative space.

Serendipity Circles – Is it time to let loose? This workshop explores stress-free methods of fusing or piecing your very own circles of serendipity. For a final flourish, the class also covers decorative embellishment and quilting techniques, including an optional “Quilt-As-You-Go” component. You can read more about Brenda’s fabulous work on her website at http://serendipitypatchwork.com.au.

Monica’s theme,“Designs that inspire creativity” truly sums up her beautiful work. At Hobbysew, Monica passes on her special secrets and tips that she uses to make her signature creations.

Monica’s class at Hobbysew Erina is busily sewing up a storm with the fun and funky Fancy Free Quilt where students learn to stack & whack, stitch & flip and some simple twisty quilting techniques. Monica also teaches her favourite fully machine-sewn, quilt-as-you-go, construction & machine-sewn binding techniques.

If you want to create quilts and clothing like Monica, limited spaces are still available for her upcoming classes, but you need to be quick to get your name down.

She will be teaching her Sea Spray Quilt, using the techniques of stitch and flip, sketchy free-motion applique. Or there’s her Day Tripper Bag, which is just the right size to fit your purse, a book, a bottle of water and a cardigan. Plenty of pockets, including a very simple to apply internal zipper pocket.

For dressmakers, Monica is teaching the adorable wrap-style dress, Rosie’s Wrap, one of the latest Mini Moonshine designs, where you will learn basic garment construction and polish up your dressmaking skills with Monica’s handy advice and tricks of the trade.

For Monica Poole fans, patterns & books are available at Erina and all Hobbysew stores. Monica also holds classes at Figtree and Kings Park. Check for details at the Classes tab.
